Who doesn't want to wrap themselves in a woolly Neolithic monument? The Dun Aengus shawl lets you do just that! The shawl takes inspiration from the famous Stone Age fort (and World Heritage Site) located on a cliff edge on Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands. As a knitter from the Aran Islands, it is a joy and pleasure to take inspiration from the Islands, and share it here!
The shape of the fort is recreated by working a rough half-pi shawl, with simple increases working outwards from the grassy centre to finish with some cabled grey stone walls. The shawl is quick and relaxing to knit, with the bonus of being completely reversible. The textured ‘grass’ is worked with simple repeating knits and purls, and when you have had enough of relaxation and fancy a little challenge, it is time to work the cabled walls. To keep the design reversible, the cables are first worked with the knit side facing outwards, and a second time with the purl side facing outwards. A picot cast off finishes the outer stone wall section.
The shawl is worked using two colours of Aran weight yarn, on one size of circular needle (US7/4.5mm). Notions required are a cable needle, and yarn needle to weave in ends. The shawl is quick and easy to work, with a simple textured centre and an easy-to-memorise cable. It would be suitable as a knitting project for someone new to cabling, as the cable pattern is not too complicated.
Full written instructions are provided in the digital download, along with charted and written instructions for the cable pattern.
(The hat modelled in some of the photos is also a knitting pattern of mine, the Andes Beanie, and the knitting pattern for it is available to purchase over here: https://www.etsy.com/ie/listing/574671620/knitting-pattern-instant-download-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_5 )

All my items are wrapped in crepe paper for free; if you would like sturdy wrapping for a festive occasion; please choose the gift wrapping option when ordering and let me know any special requirements (e.g. Christmas gift/birthday gift).
All of my knitted accessories (except items which have stuffing, like charms or baubles) can be machine-washed on a gentle wool wash at 30 degrees, or hand washed if you prefer. Certain items, such as cafetieres and tea-cosies, have been knitted in a more hard-wearing wool/acrylic mix: these can be washed in a regular machine wash at 40 degrees.
I aim to post your item on the following business day.
Absolutely! Just let me know the address of your gift recipient, and I will happily post it there directly, with a handwritten card containing the message of your choice.
I would recommend paying a little extra for registered post (which includes tracking) if this is a concern. If your (international) order has not arrived 30 days after shipping, please get in touch.
- I believe that wool is one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres in the world; being renewable and biodegradable. Most of my knits are made using natural fibres; with the exception of knits which need to be machine-washable (such as tea cosies).
- I take care to wrap your order in biodegradable materials (crepe paper and wool tie). Shipping bags are not always biodegradable; but this option is used when available. Shipping bags are recyclable in most countries.
- A packing slip is not included, to save on paper waste, and duplicating information already available online.
