Knitting pattern: Aer Beanie. My latest original knitting pattern was published in Knotions online magazine in December 2022, and now I'm delighted to offer it for sale here too!
The Aer Beanie takes its name from the Irish word for ‘Air’, and uses simple 1/1 cables to create air bubbles that rise from the twisted ribbing to the crown decreases of the hat. At first these bubbles are regular, but as they rise (and as you work further on the hat) they become free-floating – so you can add them randomly as you choose. Each hat will truly be one-of-a-kind. Only one skein of sportweight yarn, and one size of circular knitting needle is required to create this light-as-air hat.
Hat size (adjustable)
Circumference: 18”/45 cm
Depth: 8.5”/21.5 cm
The hat pictured was knit in Yarn Vibes Organic Yarn Sportweight wool in shade Bog Cotton.
US4/3.5mm circular knitting needles
Tapestry Needle (to weave in ends)
Stitch Marker (to mark start of row)
• The pattern is worked in the round, on one size of needle.
• The crown decrease section takes 1.5”/4cm, so you can modify the depth of the hat by continuing the main body to your desired length. You can even create a slouchy beanie by knitting around 12”/30cm before starting the crown decreases.
• The pattern repeats are over 8 sts. You can create a smaller or larger hat by casting on 8 sts less (or more). For an even smaller or larger hat, use multiples of 8 (e.g. 16 sts less for a child-sized hat).
• All knit sts are worked twisted (tbl), for more definition.
I would rate the difficulty of this hat as easy/medium - the cabling is not taxing, as they are worked over small areas. A lot of the hat is worked in relaxing reverse stocking stitch (purl). This is a great one skein project, perfect for using up a special single skein, or for travel knitting.
It's my great pleasure to continue working in the Aran knitting tradition to bring new patterns to knitters all over the world - thank you for looking and feel free to contact me if you have any questions : )

All my items are wrapped in crepe paper for free; if you would like sturdy wrapping for a festive occasion; please choose the gift wrapping option when ordering and let me know any special requirements (e.g. Christmas gift/birthday gift).
All of my knitted accessories (except items which have stuffing, like charms or baubles) can be machine-washed on a gentle wool wash at 30 degrees, or hand washed if you prefer. Certain items, such as cafetieres and tea-cosies, have been knitted in a more hard-wearing wool/acrylic mix: these can be washed in a regular machine wash at 40 degrees.
I aim to post your item on the following business day.
Absolutely! Just let me know the address of your gift recipient, and I will happily post it there directly, with a handwritten card containing the message of your choice.
I would recommend paying a little extra for registered post (which includes tracking) if this is a concern. If your (international) order has not arrived 30 days after shipping, please get in touch.
- I believe that wool is one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres in the world; being renewable and biodegradable. Most of my knits are made using natural fibres; with the exception of knits which need to be machine-washable (such as tea cosies).
- I take care to wrap your order in biodegradable materials (crepe paper and wool tie). Shipping bags are not always biodegradable; but this option is used when available. Shipping bags are recyclable in most countries.
- A packing slip is not included, to save on paper waste, and duplicating information already available online.
